Hi,

I got some problems localizing my quite fresh FreeBSD 5.3 installation. I
followed the instructions given in the FreeBSD Handbook and now my X11
applications appear in German, but the console doesn't seem to be affected
at all. Additionally I get numerous error messages like "Failed to set
default locale" when installing software. Installing fluxbox, for example,
looks like this:

su-3.00# pkg_add -r fluxbox
Fetching ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-5.3-rele \\
ase/Latest/fluxbox.tbz...(null): Failed to
set default locale
Done.
Fetching
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-5.3-release/All/b \\
oxtools-0.65.0.tbz...(null): Failed to set default locale
Done.
(null): (null): Failed to set default localeFailed to set default locale

(null): (null): Failed to set default locale
Failed to set default locale

An "echo $LANG" on the console gives me "de_DE", "echo $LC_ALL" doesn't
return anything at all. The handbook says setting only LANG doesn't matter
since it's used synonymously.
I searched the net a lot, but only found one post which wasn't even
answered. I contacted the writer, but he hasn't found a solution yet
either.

Bye,

Daniel

Setting 2 environmental variables solves this for me:
declare -x LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
declare -x LC_COLLATE="C"
