Greetings.

I'm having trouble deciding as to which version of FBSD I should get.
Obviously 5.x should have more support for NFORCE2 and NVIDIA cards and
sound.

My current hardware is an Asus A7N8X Deluxe mobo, 524MB RAM, 20 and 40
GB HDDs a Memorex CRW-1622 drive, parallel zip100 drive, Palm 515,
Handspring Visor Edge, Logitech Marble Mouse, Logitech Internet
Navigator Keyboard, HP DeskJet 672C printer and HP ScanJet 4470c.

Any pros and cons about both versions, etc.

What about dependencies and package handling?

Thank you.

This is not in fact obvious - the graphics card support comes from
XFree86 and the binary drivers from Nvidia so it should be the same.

The -current mailing list has an active thread running on the
subject of "sound/pcm/* bugs".

Consider these, read the early adopters guide and make up your
own mind. If you are still in doubt then try both out now while it's
still easy.

Some of the ports don't compile under the shiny new gcc in 5.x
but they are getting fixed.

If you don't know, choose -STABLE (ie. 4.9).
If you are adventurous, can't wait to try out the newest things, and
don't mind some extra troubles along the way, choose 5.2.

But don't say we didn't warn you.

Do not choose -CURRENT, unless you are ready for mostly troubles, or you
are training yourself to be a developer. Developers handles lots of
trouble before they become familiar enough with the code to fix the
problems they run into.
