In my knowledgebase's hardware category, you'll find a link called "Help
Resources", on
http://linuxmafia.com/kb/Hardware/ . That's my
centralised link farm for information on Linux support for various types
of hardware. (Much of that information is also, I expect, usable for
*BSD.) Included are links specifically for USB and IR.
I expect that pretty much everything you need to read will be findable

I note that the latter (Gnokii FAQ) lists the Nokia model 6610 as
specifically supported, so if your Nokia 6600 isn't far different, you
should be fine.
