Post subject: Hardware Devices

I currently use Windows and am contemlating of
changing platforms to either Linux or FreeBSD. I have no problem chaging
paradigms and am willing to emrace UNIX philosophy such as command line as
opposed to GUI, small and reliable programs as opposed to large monolithic
ones, etc. My problem is hardware support. Is there good hardware support
out there? Particularly, what are the options if i want to connect my nokia
6600 fone to transfer files and pix? I dont ask for anything gui like the
nokia suite in widows but i just want it to connect. I could then use the
cammand line or a script perhaps or even program a crude file transfer app
just so i can escape windows. I hope there is a solution or am i stuck with
windows? If pogramming a device driver is the only way, is it difficult? how
long would it take? Does nokia allow it? please help me out. i desperately
need to get out of here.

Well - easy way - go to www.knoppix.com
and download knoppix LiveCD and boot
up from CD. No need to configure
anything. It just boots automatically.
You can judge how much of your hardware
is working straight away. Other bigger
distros have more - but at least you have
a good up front indication.

that realy depends on how the phone is announcing itself. if it's a
standard USB (i'm assuming) mass storage device, then yes. it will show
as a standard hdd when connected. if it's using another proprietary
interface, then it probably won't work.
the gphoto project has support for a LOT of digital cameras, but no
telling about how/if the phone is detected. try Knoppix (Linux live
CD)or FreeSBIE (FreeBSD live CD) and see if it's detected.

Its connected through usb ir.
there's a project supporting lots of digital
cameras? does this work in FreeBSD? is it already usable
or still buggy? If its usable, I'd rather use it and buy a digicam than use
my phone and end up using windows. But it would be better of course if it
would support my fone directly. btw, where can i find this project?

In my knowledgebase's hardware category, you'll find a link called "Help
Resources", on http://linuxmafia.com/kb/Hardware/ . That's my
centralised link farm for information on Linux support for various types
of hardware. (Much of that information is also, I expect, usable for
*BSD.) Included are links specifically for USB and IR.

I expect that pretty much everything you need to read will be findable
from that page, including:

I note that the latter (Gnokii FAQ) lists the Nokia model 6610 as
specifically supported, so if your Nokia 6600 isn't far different, you
should be fine.
