Workload Management for Linux

We have covered many aspects of Linux clustering recently ranging from
wiring, provisioning nodes and running jobs. Now that your cluster is
getting useful work done, the next important step is to optimize
workload control and maximize the efficiency of your system.
Dr. Srinidhi Varadarajan, CTO of Evergrid, will discuss how their
workload management technology for Linux, Load Manager, can deliver:

1. Application consolidation, to maximize server utilization while
delivering a predictable level of service.
2. Detailed monitoring of application resource usage - without
modification to either the OS or application and with negligible
overhead.

Load Manager delivers fine grain control and monitoring of system
resource independently across CPU, memory, network read / write &
storage read / write. As a user space technology, it is completely
transparent to both the OS and application with minimal overhead
(typically less than 1%). Load Manager enables multiple applications to
be consolidated on a single server by placing users, groups or
applications into Containers, and allocating resources to these
Containers. It has a dynamic rebalancing system where unused system
resources allocated to one Container can be reallocated to other
Containers on the same server, thereby maximizing server utilization
while guaranteeing SLA.s. Srinidhi will discuss and demonstrate
multiple use cases for both consolidating and monitoring applications
using this technology today (supporting RHEL 3, 4 & 5, SLES 9 & 10),
and discuss how Load Manager will leverage the emerging Control Groups
technology to deliver even greater functionality on upcoming
distributions (RHEL 6 / SLES 11).

Your open source feedback is needed!
During the last 15 minutes of this meeting, Evergrid will open the
floor to comments about which components could be open sourced and
offer the most value to the community.

Raffle for BOSE Headphones:
At the conclusion of the meeting, Evergrid will be raffling off a pair
of high-end BOSE headphones.

About Srinidhi Varadarajan:
Dr. Srinidhi Varadarajan is the CTO of Evergrid, as well as the Director
of the Terascale Computing Facility and an Associate Professor in the
Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech. His research interests
are in the area of high performance computer systems, in particular:
fault tolerance in large-scale distributed systems, network emulation,
network routing algorithms, compiler directed frameworks and parallel
simulation algorithms. Srinidhi heads the Computing Systems Research
Laboratory and serves as a core faculty in the Laboratory for Advanced
Scientific Computing and Applications
