Hi everybody,

I've got a Gateway Solo9500, PIII 750, 128 MB with FreeBSD 5.1
installed. I'm trying to get the soundcard working. I've read the
FreeBSD handbook and I've added the option 'device pcm' to my kernel
and have recompiled with no errors. However after typing '# grep pcm
/var/run/dmesg.boot' I see no drivers listed. I want to makesure I
have the right soundcard. Does anyone know of a boot disk I may use
that will list the hardware on my laptop? Also, assuming I have the
correct soundcard, how do I get it working? Thanks.

Sean

try snd_driver_load="YES" in /boot/loader.conf
if that works then look in /boot/defaults/loader.conf and pick and
choose from the various sound modules until you find the one that
works... or just continue to load all of them Smile

Thank you very much for the reply. I did what you suggested and I've
got sound <smile> However when I play a mp3 it only plays out of one
speaker on the laptop. Also the volume is a bit low. How do you
adjust the volume in FreeBSD? Thanks for any help.

For volume control, you can use the mixer(Cool command line tool. I don't
know, whether you will be able to get sound on the second speaker that
way.

If it doesn't work, could you post the relevant bits of a dmesg and the
output of `cat /dev/soundstat' (I hope that the last thing still exists
on FreeBSD 5).

I was able to control the sound volume with 'mixer' as well as getting
audio from both speakers with the command 'mixer pcm 100:100". Thanks
to all who have responded. I have one more issue with sound.
Sometimes when I boot, I get NO sound. If I try to play an mp3 I get
the error 'pipe broken' I would reboot and I would get sound again.
The following appears in dmesg:

pcm0: <ESS Technology Allergo-1> port 0x4000-0x40ff irq 5 at device
8.0 on pci 2
pcm0: failed to enable memory mapping!
pcm0: <ESS Technology ES1988 AC97 Codec>

Can anyone help me with this error? Thanks
