Back in April an erratum was discovered on page 139 of The FreeBSD Handbook
regarding the startup of KDE2. After this question was posed to the experts
it was determined that the correct path to the file "startkde" is:

/usr/local/bin

Now, by executing the line given on page 139 with the corrected path:

# echo "usr/local/bin/startkde" > ~/.initrc

not only does KDE not start automatically, we get:

Fatal server error:
Cannot open log file "/var/log/XFree86.0.log"

Now what?

That should be /usr/local/bin/startkde (I assume that's the correct
path) and .xinitrc not .initrc

Your error has absolutely nothing to do with KDE. It looks like you
didn't install the wrapper port (/usr/ports/x11/wrapper)

That was a typo in composing my original post. It is the correct path
despite what the book says.

The wrapper port! I would think the installer program would take care
of that but what do I know?

I assume you have a typo above, ie,

# echo "/usr/local/bin/startkde" > ~/.initrc

Do you have a /var partition and a /var/log
directory?

Two things:

1.) verify you have the wrapper for X installed

2.) the file is actually called .xinitrc, not .initrc
try to add "exec startkde" to .xinitrc
