Hi,

I am looking at running a webmail server on a FreeBSD box, both the
FreeBSD and mailserver admin will be new to me but I would like to
do this to provide a "real world" learning experience and to give something
back to the Internet community.

I would like to query recommendations in terms of software to use. The
webmail service will be free and offer 250mb diskspace to each member.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Wayne.

Just simply do a search in ports:
cd /usr/ports/mail
make search key=webmail

I have something similar running here, although it's actually not a
free webmail service. The box is on FreeBSD 4.10-RELEASE, sendmail was
substituted by Exim 4 (personal flavour, very good documentation) and
Courier IMAP on top of maildirs. Of course I filter with the mails
with spamd and clamav, but you have to decide whether the box is
strong enough for that, depending on the actual load..
The webmail interface is supplied by the current horde framework,
webserver Apache-SSL 1.3.x with SSL enabled on the specific
directories. All software was installed through the ports tree.

The whole setup runs very smooth, no problems so far except for the
horde ports that messes up the horde conf paths from time to time.
I would say you'll be able to set up the system pretty fast, if you
read the handbook and some howtos.

Regards, Daniel
