Hi, I'm setting up a 4.10 system, and am wondering what is the
shortest path to an email set-up that does smtp and pop/imap with
password authentication.

I've been using sendmail & popper for years, but no authentication
or imap. Volume will be low.

Thanks

For sendmail, use SMTP AUTH. Just install the port and see the docs on
www.sendmail.org.

For imap, I'm personally fond of Cyrus V2.2 (also in the ports). It'll
work with the same authentication as for sendmail with SMTP AUTH.
Nicely that way you don't even need OS accounts Smile

If I'm understanding this, for SMTP AUTH I need to install the port
"sendmail-sasl" . Is this correct?

Post subject: sendmail-sasl & cyrus-imapd22 configuration question (was: email advice... [Login to view extended thread Info.]
Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

For both smtp and imap, I want users to use their ordinary login
passwords, but not to transmit them in the clear. Most of my users
use Mail.app (OS/X).

I installed the two ports in the subject line, but am baffled by
how to configure them. I'm willing to deinstall them and start
over, if someone could summarize what configurations options I
need.

For example, should I use saslauthd for the sasl_pwcheck_method?
Should just login be in the sasl_mech_list? And so on.

Thanks

And set up the SASL configuration, but basically yes.

In that case, assuming you're using PAM to access the local passwords,
you need to use TLS/SSL AFAIK.

Go read the documentation, it contains everything you need, honest. If
stuck comp.mail.sendmail has recently had a thread on this that you'll
find at groups.google.com.

You'll find more on SMTP AUTH with sendmail at www.sendmail.org.
